Waiting on Wednesday: Tales From My Closet by Jennifer Anne Moses

Tales From My Closet
Author: Jennifer Anne Moses (website)
Publisher: Scholastic Press
Expected publication date: January 28, 2014

Goodreads synopsis:
Five girls. A paper dress. Tons of shoes. One unforgettable raincoat. White Jeans. Secrets. Drama. Friends?

For Justine, Bianca, Becka, Polly, and Anne, living in Westfield, New Jersey is "life on planet toilet paper." At least that's how Justine feels when she shows up as the new girl in school wearing a Scott Paper Caper dress. To her, it's a super-original fashion statement. But other "loser freaks" don't agree.

The other girls have their own fashion issues, ranging from fabulous boots to raggedy pajamas to what to wear to therapy. Told in alternating voices, TALES FROM MY CLOSET follows the stories of high school kids who have nothing in common--and everything in common. They're at war with each other, but through their clothes, they reveal and conceal themselves and make peace with what it means to be a teen. Over the course of a school year, their individual struggles and successes come together to tell a story that's funny, honest, and all-girl fabulous.

Normally I don't get to do any catalogue creeping super early because, frankly, I'm busy. But yesterday I managed to take a look at some of the upcoming YA releases from Scholastic, and this one totally stood out to me. You guys know how much I like fashion - and girl power. This novel feels like something new - a novel that really takes clothing and makes it huge part of the plot. I'm very interested to see how this will unfold.

Jennifer Anne Moses is a new author to me - I did a little research and she's written a lot of different stuff, from adult non-fiction to short story anthologies. This is her YA debut, and I'm looking forward to discovering what she does with these characters and this concept!

Have you heard about Tales from My Closet? What do you think of the clothing/identity concept? What about the alternating voices? Have you read anything about Jennifer Anne Moses? What are you waiting for this week? Let me know in the comments!

  1. This looks different from what I'd normally pick up, but it sounds original. Great pick!

  2. This sounds like it could be a lot of fun, and an interesting dimension to a YA contemp. To some in high school, clothing is very important as an outward expression of uniqueness/nonconformity or a means of fitting in. I love stories that focus on friendships as well.

  3. Hmm I haven't read anything by this author but this sounds like it will be a good read. Going to check it out. :) Thanks for sharing.

    my WOW:

  4. This sounds super interesting, I''l be sure to add it to my TBR pile. Thanks for sharing! :)
